Mud Hog Charity Information:
Breathe New Hampshire is the state's oldest nonprofit voluntary health agency. It was established in 1916, when a group of concerned New Hampshire residents organized to form the New Hampshire Tuberculosis Association. The original mission was to stop the spread of tuberculosis in the Granite State. It was during this period that TB sanatoriums were built throughout the state to help patients with TB to recover and to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease to others.
Later in the century, antibiotics were discovered that cured tuberculosis and brought the spread of the disease under control. The New Hampshire Tuberculosis Association became the New Hampshire Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association and began addressing more generalized problems associated with lung health in the State. Today, as Breathe New Hampshire, the organization's mission encompasses the challenges associated with asthma management; keeping both indoor and outdoor air clean; nicotine addiction; COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease); and other matters affecting healthy breathing.
